Künstlerhaus Lukas is a place of artistic work and international gathering. It promotes professional artists in the genres of fine arts, literature, dance and composition as well as curators through the awarding of residence scholarships.
We particularly aim at facilitating interesting cooperations and international dialogue between the arts and conveying to the public. Thereby, the international context with the countries of Northern Europe lies in the centre of attention.
Artists and curators may apply for work stays at Künstlerhaus Lukas, a place rich in tradition, and within the international exchange programme for a scholarship at our partner institutions in Northern Europe. There are several places which are reserved exclusively for artists from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Artists from our partner institutions in Northern Europe are invited to come and stay in Ahrenshoop. Künstlerhaus Lukas promotes with the award of curator scholarships the realisation of selected projects and presents them in cooperation with national and international partner institutions to the public.
Every two years, the scholarships will be awarded in the following genres: fine arts (painting, sculpture, graphic arts, photography, artistic book, video, arts and crafts/design), literature (narrative literature, lyrics, drama, screenplay, essay, literary translation), dance (choreography, performance), composition and curation.
Up to six scholarship holders can work and stay at Künstlerhaus Lukas at the same time. There are 6 rent-free apartments available. 4 of them consist of a living room and a studio; 2 of them consist of a combined study and living room. Additionally, two small studios are available free of charge: for photography and graphic prints. The apartments are fully equipped and have individual private bathroom facitlities and telephone/internet connection. Communicative meeting points in the house are a lounge/public room, two common kitchens and two terraces. To limited extent, apartments may also be rented, especially by former scholarship holders.
At present, our international exchange partner institutions are the Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators Visby (Gotland, Sweden), the KKV Graphic Workshop Malmö & Sculpture Workshop Monumental Malmö (Sweden), the Graphic Workshop Odense (Denmark), the National Centre for Contemporary Arts Kaliningrad (Russian Federation), the Gaesteatelier Hollufgard (Denmark), the Artists Centre MoKs (Estonia) as well as the NES Artist Residency in Skagaströnd (Iceland).
The artistic work of the scholarship holders will be presented in readings, exhibitions, concerts, performances and other public presentations with the help of our important local partner institutions, especially Neues Kunsthaus Ahrenshoop, Filmkunstfest Schwerin and the Art Museum in Ahrenshoop.
At Künstlerhaus Lukas, scholarship holders invite the interested public to a day of open doors and give them insight into their work and host studio exhibitions, readings, concerts or performances - generally every last Sunday of the month. In addition to these open days, there are also special events at Künstlerhaus Lukas suring the Long Night of Art or Ahrenshoop Literature Days.The Künstlerhaus Lukas is situated within the funding body of the association Künstlerhaus Ahrenshoop e.V. and thereby it continues since January 2006 the previous approved work of the foundation Kulturfond in extended form. The commune Ahrenshoop takes care of the maintenance and preservation of the building. The ministry for education, science and culture of the state Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania holds the basic funding of the Künstlerhaus in cooperation with private sponsors. The ZEIT-foundation Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius supported the reopening. The cultural administration Berlin or the art foundation Saxony-Anhalt, the FAMA art foundation Hannover with the Foundation Art Museum Ahrenshoop or the Hotel The Grand, the Dorint-Hotel Wustrow, the commune Wustrow are cooperating in the funding for the scholarship programme.
A circle of friends with numerous personalities from the cultural life supports the work of the house, especially for additionally selected project funding in cooperation with the Neues Kunsthaus. The scholarship programme should be strenghended by the cooperation with the ministry of education and cultural affairs from other states of the Federal Republic of Germany.
